The Most Surprising Jackson Hole Day Might Start Inside a Museum
· Go Roam Wild
Jackson Hole makes it easy to focus on the animals outside: elk in a meadow, birds overhead, the shapes of the Tetons against the sky. The National Museum of Wildlife Art gives you another way into that landscape. Instead of hoping an animal appears on cue, you see how artists have tried to capture what wildlife means to them.
The museum sits north of Jackson above the National Elk Refuge, so the setting is part of the experience. Don’t expect a wildlife sighting; the view of the valley and the artwork already give you enough to pay attention to.
START WITH THE GALLERIES, NOT THE GIFT SHOP
Choose one animal—maybe a bison, an owl or a bear—and look at how its meaning changes across works. Is the artist recording anatomy and movement? Building a sense of power? Asking you to care about an ecosystem? Once you notice these choices, the paintings and sculptures become more than beautiful representations of animals.
The museum’s 2026 Birds in Art exhibition celebrates 50 years of the annual show. Look for the personalities artists give their feathered subjects: a bird can feel fragile in one image, fiercely independent in another. Later this month, Cristina Mittermeier: A Greater Wisdom begins October 31. Her photography links wildlife and ecosystems with the people and cultural knowledge that help protect them. It’s an especially useful reminder that conservation is about relationships, not simply spectacular wildlife photographs.
ADD THE SCULPTURE TRAIL, THEN LUNCH
After the galleries, take your curiosity outdoors on the museum’s sculpture trail if the weather and footing are comfortable. The setting changes how the art reads: an animal sculpted in a gallery feels different when it is framed by the actual landscape. This makes a natural pause between the indoor visit and whatever comes next.
Then consider lunch at Palate, the museum’s on-site restaurant. It keeps the outing simple and gives you time to talk about what surprised you, instead of racing straight to another attraction. The museum and restaurant follow seasonal schedules, so use the operator’s current information for the day you choose.
MAKE IT AN ACTUAL HALF-DAY
An easy sequence is galleries, sculpture trail, lunch, and then a slower walk around Jackson Town Square if you still want more. The museum is not in the middle of downtown; plan the trip between them. In fall, snow or ice can change how pleasant the outdoor portions feel, so keep the museum itself as the anchor.
